Physical Description:
The hawksbill turtle is a small to medium-sized sea turtle known for its distinctive appearance. It has an elongated, tapered head with a beak-like mouth resembling that of a bird, which is where it gets its common name. The carapace, or shell, of the hawksbill turtle is uniquely beautiful, with overlapping scutes (scales) that are often richly patterned with amber, brown, and yellow streaks. These patterns provide excellent camouflage among coral reefs. Adult hawksbills typically measure between 60 to 95 centimeters (24 to 37 inches) in shell length and weigh between 40 to 60 kilograms (88 to 132 pounds). Their flippers are adapted for swimming, with two claws on each front flipper.
Habitat:
Hawksbill turtles are found primarily in tropical coral reefs, but they can also be seen in rocky coastal areas, lagoons, and mangroves. They inhabit the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, with significant populations in the Caribbean Sea, the western Atlantic Ocean, and the Indo-Pacific region. Hawksbills prefer shallow waters where they can easily access their primary food source, sponges, although they may migrate long distances to find suitable nesting sites on sandy beaches.
