Scientific Name: Gramma loreto
Description: The fairy basslet, also known as the royal gramma, exhibits a striking combination of colors and features that make it a standout inhabitant of coral reefs. The dominant coloration of the fairy basslet is a vibrant purple to violet hue, extending from its head to the posterior portion of its body. This striking coloration is accented by contrasting yellow or orange markings, including a distinctive stripe running along its dorsal fin and a patch of color near its eye. Additionally, the fairy basslet may display iridescent blue or green highlights along its body, adding to its overall allure. These fish typically reach lengths of around 3 inches (7.5 centimeters).
Habitat: The fairy basslet is native to the warm, tropical waters of the western Atlantic Ocean, where it inhabits coral reefs, rocky outcrops, and other sheltered areas with abundant coral cover. It is commonly found in depths ranging from shallow coastal waters to deeper reef slopes, often seeking refuge among branching corals or rocky crevices. Fairy basslets are social and gregarious fish, often forming loose aggregations or small groups while foraging for food or seeking shelter.
Behavior: When encountered by divers exploring their underwater habitat, fairy basslets typically exhibit a curious yet cautious response. These peaceful and sociable fish are known for their inquisitive demeanor and may approach divers with interest, especially if they are accustomed to human presence. However, they are also sensitive to sudden movements and disturbances and may quickly retreat into the safety of nearby coral cover if they feel threatened or startled. With patience and gentle movements, divers can often observe fairy basslets going about their daily activities, including feeding, swimming, and interacting with other reef inhabitants.
